Residential & Commercial Exterior Decking![]()
Magellan’s Walk Green™ FSC® Exterior decking is perfect for any Residential or Commercial application. Manufactured to the highest standards, our Decking is sure to last for many years, taking the toughest beating you and your family can dish out.
You can be certain that Magellan will supply your floor or deck in accordance with FSC® Principles and Criteria ensuring responsible forestry while protecting both the natural forest habitat and forest workers.
- Kiln Dried: We Kiln Dry all of our decking. Drying is important to stabilize wood from undue twisting and cupping and to ensure the product arrives to the customer as ordered.
- Clear All-Heart: This ensures that your deck will be clear of imperfections. All decks are clear of defect on three sides. We allow minor visible defects on the bottom side.
- Durability: Our decking is durable. Durability is a major concern when buying and installing exterior decking. Pine, Cedar and Redwood just do not compare to the species that we offer for exterior durability. We do not treat any of our wood with chemicals.
- End Sealing: We seal all ends of our boards to stabilize the ends from undue checking.
- Packaging: Our decking containers come in lengths which are useful, functional and maximize yield in the forest. In a typical shipment 50% of the pieces are 8 to 11 feet in length and the other 50% of the pieces are 12 to 18 feet in length with odd and even lengths allowed.
[ FOREST PRODUCTS DISCLAIMER ]
Forest Products Disclaimer
All decking species, whether softwood or hardwood, will to a certain degree encounter “movement” in thickness and width due to different and ever-changing exterior weather conditions. You cannot consider outdoor decking as a piece of furniture.
Our tropical decking products are carefully manufactured and inspected to ensure quality; however, these products are natural wood products and as such are subject to variations in weight, density, color, grain and performance. Wood decking is subject to dimensional changes as the moisture content in the wood changes with humidity in the air. Swelling, shrinkage, checking, and other movement of individual pieces are normal occurrences in wood decking.
Due to the natural characteristics of wood decking, many oil and water based coatings and finishes may have a reaction with the wood. These reactions may include, and are not limited to, drying, adhesion, and color change. It is recommended that installers test any finishing product over several samples of decking to determine compatibility. Sizes and specifications are subject to change without notice. Local building codes must be consulted when building an exterior deck. Most counties require building permits.
Suggestions for Your Decking Project
The following are merely suggestions: please consult a qualified contractor prior to installing your decking.
Storage & Handling:
Keep your decking covered with a tarp prior to installation to prevent bleaching from the sun. Even if your hardwood decking is kiln dried or air dried, it should be allowed to acclimate to your outdoor environment 1 to 2 weeks prior to installation.
Spacing between Planks:
Spacing between planks should be determined by your geological area and climate conditions. Some suppiers recommend as much as 1/4" between planks; we suggest 1/8” when possible.
Decking Fasteners:
The method of fastening your deck is your choice, though we suggest using stainless steel screws for the best results. However, today there are a variety of hidden fastener systems that may work just as well depending on your tastes.
Proper Airflow & Moisture Control:
Proper airflow around your deck is something that should always be considered. Decks should be built at least 12” to 16” above ground level to ensure adequate airflow. Where water is an issue, you may need to build higher or incorporate a moisture barrier to prevent warping, twisting, cupping and splitting of your deck boards. Regardless of climate, a wax sealer should always be used during or immediately after installation to prevent your boards from splitting.
Finishing:
Although many hardwood decks remain untreated, you do have several options available to preserve its rich, deep color. The best option is offered by products with UV protection. If left unfinished, your hardwood deck will develop a nice silver-gray patina.
